Bit.Tonik: Blip Fest 09 Gaijin/Robotube "Battle of the Brands"

Well, folks....here it is. This is THE version of the game we built in less than 24 hours...18 hours to be more precise. As the ever-wise Alex Neuse of Gaijin Games put it, "We do have a game. It's not bad, but
it's not great." And that is the truth. At approximately 3:00am on Friday morning, we (Alex Neuse and Chris
Osborne of Gaijin Games and Jason Cirillo of Robotube Games) threw in the towel after knocking out a serious bug that rendered the game unplayable. At that point, we were absolutely through. None of us had
slept in nearly 48 hours, we had our fill of fine whiskeys and other assorted Blip Fest spirits, and were surrounded by people who were partying their faces off. Needless to say, that was a recipe for
monkeywrenches, and there are a lot. I should point out a few pretty glaring issues:

  1. No Game Over. The game "ends" but it doesn't really "end".
  2. Sound Integration: being a Blip Fest inspired project, we wanted much more real sound integration and for music to play an important part. Time did not allow this...for now.
  3. The Infamous "Crotch Bug": If a beat lands right in the gap (crotch) of the bottom Blok lane and the wall, it will form a weird orange block that sort of sits in the middle of the board for no reason. We're still investigating this bug.
  4. Scoring: Planned to have 2 scores which combine at the end: A "Beat" score and a "Blok" score. Right now, there's only a "Blok" score.
  5. Overall polish, fun-factor and "Gameness." Doesn't really feel finished because it's not! So much work to be done in every single aspect, but as we promised, we would give you what we ended with. We still hope you enjoy it despite it's total imperfect nakedness.
As you play the "game", remember that this was something built in less than a day, and we kept our promise to add absolutely NOTHING to it, and repair NONE of the bugs, so you are going to find a lot of
problems...some serious, some minor. But what you will also find is a rather interesting little mechanic for something that can evolve into something very special.
And with that, I will tell you that this does not end here. We have decided to further develop this and see how awesome we can make it, and I believe we can make it very awesome. Aside from updates to Bit.Tonik, we will also soon be releasing our video diary from the day, a post-mortem, and lots of other special little secret treats. Keep it tuned to robotubegames.com and gaijingames.com for continuing news and tidbits on the "Battle of the Brands" project.
Very special thanks go to Blip Fest 09 for an amazingly rocking event and the opportunity to let us carry out this crazy experiment, to Glomag for the sweet gift of Chiptunes which grace our little Frankengame, and for all the fans who stopped by to show their appreciation and support of our insanity. We love you guys!
And so the story continues...
